Hungry Horse is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in central Flathead County, Montana. Located at the confluence of the Flathead River and its South Fork, the community has a population of 828 according to the 2020 census. The area sits along U.S. Route 2, positioned ten miles northeast of West Glacier and twenty-three miles southwest of Kalispell.
The community's origins are tied to the construction of Hungry Horse Dam. During this project, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation brought more than one hundred prefabricated buildings to house workers, which formed the foundation of the settlement. Originally called Damtown, the community received its current name in 1948 when Flathead County commissioners renamed it Hungry Horse. This distinctive name derives from a local legend about two horses named Tex and Jerry that escaped and nearly starved to death in deep snow along the South Fork of the Flatland River.
Geography defines much of the area's character. Bad Rock Canyon lies less than a mile west of town, while the famous Hungry Horse Dam sits four miles southeast along West Side Road up the South Fork valley. The census-designated place covers approximately 1.5 square miles total.
