Madison, located in Somerset County, Maine, is a town of approximately 4,726 residents according to the 2020 census. The area has a rich and layered history spanning centuries. Before English settlement, the region was home to the Norridgewock Indians, a band of the Abenaki nation who cultivated extensive fields and fished the Kennebec River. French Jesuits established a mission there in the late 1600s, but conflict with English colonists led to attacks on the village in 1705 and 1722. A final assault in August 1724 proved devastating, resulting in casualties including the missionary Father Sebastien Rale.
English colonists began settling the area around 1773, and the town was officially incorporated on March 7, 1804, taking its name from President James Madison. The town's economy developed around natural advantages: the Norridgewock Falls drop 90 feet over a mile, powering sawmills and other manufacturers. Early industries included farming, slate quarrying, and lumber production. By the 19th century, factories produced carriages, window sash, blinds, doors, and coffins. Railroad arrival in 1875 spurred growth, including woolen mills established in 1881 and 1887, and a pulp and paper mill that operated until 2016.
Madison is also home to Lakewood Summer Theatre, which opened in 1901 and became Maine's official summer theatre in 1967. The town completed the Backyard Farms greenhouse in 2007, Maine's largest structure by volume.
