Otsego is a city in Allegan County, Michigan, with a population of 4,120 according to the 2020 census. Located on M-89 about three miles west of Plainwell and roughly nine miles southeast of Allegan, the city sits along the Kalamazoo River as it flows east to west through the community.
The city was established in fall of 1831 by the Samuel Foster family from Vermont. Early settlers called it Pine Creek, but a post office established in 1832 initially used the name Allegan. When Allegan County was organized in 1835, Dr. Samuel Foster championed a name change to Otsego, derived from Otsego Lake in New York and rooted in Iroquoian languages. A school opened in 1833, followed by the Tompkins House hotel in the 1860s.
Otsego gained regional prominence in the 1870s for its Mineral Springs Bath House, which drew visitors from across the Midwest seeking medicinal waters until the mineral springs were depleted by George Bardeen's paper mill in 1887. The 1880s brought significant development, including Otsego High School's first commencement in 1883, a home-delivery milk route in 1885, and a volunteer fire department in 1886. Wilson C. Edsell's Opera House, built in 1881, served as the town's primary entertainment venue for decades, hosting theatrical productions, vaudeville shows, and minstrel performances.
The city also holds a notable place in baseball history. During the 1902 season, Negro league pioneer Andrew "Rube" Foster played for the local Otsego Independents before going on to help found the Negro National League. A monument honoring Foster was placed at Memorial Park in 2000.
